Khruangbin
Khruangbin is an eclectic American musical trio from Houston, Texas, celebrated for their unique, genre-defying sound. The band—consisting of Laura Lee Ochoa (bass/vocals), Mark Speer (guitar/vocals), and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums/keys/vocals)—is known for blending global influences like 1960s Thai rock, Iranian pop, and dub with the foundational grooves of American soul, funk, and psychedelic rock. Their music is predominantly instrumental, characterized by Lee’s distinctive, heavy basslines, Speer’s reverb-drenched guitar melodies, and Johnson’s laid-back, breakbeat-based drumming, all recorded in a remote barn in rural Texas. This mesmerizing, often cinematic “world groove” has earned them a reputation for creating deeply hypnotic and highly sought-after soundscapes, solidifying their status as one of the most original bands of the last decade across albums like The Universe Smiles Upon You, Mordechai, and their latest, A La Sala.
