Alex Hubbard: Abstract or Regular?

Regen Projects presents Abstract or Regular?, an exhibition of new video work and a painting by Los Angeles-based artist Alex Hubbard. The show features six larger-than-life animations projected onto wooden constructions cut into the shapes of their subjects, from cartoon characters to an electrocuted pickle. Through these playful and formally inventive works, Hubbard explores how motion can exist within fixed objects, pushing the boundaries between painting, sculpture, film, and performance.

The exhibition works against the glossy perfection of AI-generated imagery and digital fabrication, turning instead toward the everyday, the found, and the handmade. With humor, experimentation, and material curiosity, Abstract or Regular? invites viewers into a lively visual world where abstraction, representation, and physical structure constantly shift. The exhibition opens with a reception on July 11, 2026, and is on view through August 15, 2026.
