CHARLES ARNOLDI

Michael Kohn Gallery presents Charles Arnoldi: String Theory, focusing on a series of paintings created between 2016 and 2019 by one of the defining figures of West Coast abstraction. Arnoldi builds these works through fluid, looping lines that travel across the canvas, accumulating into dense networks of movement before unexpected shapes emerge from the intersections and are filled with color.

The series reflects Arnoldi’s decades-long exploration of line, shape, color, gesture, and visual complexity, balancing spontaneity with the physical boundaries of the canvas. At 80, and after more than 55 years of exhibitions, Arnoldi continues to push abstraction toward a lively equilibrium between structure and improvisation. String Theory remains on view through December 12, 2026.
