City of Dance
Hollywood Forever presents City of Dance, a striking cultural event that brings dance out of the traditional theater setting and into direct conversation with the city itself. Adapted from La Ville Dansée, the landmark Paris Dance Project initiative imagined by Benjamin Millepied, this U.S. version is built around the idea that dance should meet people where they are, removing the distance between performer, audience, and public space. The event carries a thoughtful and civic spirit, inviting audiences to experience movement not as something enclosed behind velvet curtains, but as a living art form shaped by history, place, and the body.
The project is especially resonant in the way it connects dance with memory, empathy, and urban life. As described by Hollywood Forever, the body carries history, and the city carries history; bringing those histories together becomes part of the emotional and political force of the work. This edition is inspired by Koyaanisqatsi and Philip Glass’s extraordinary score, with Benjamin Millepied imagining a single work created through the vision of five choreographers. Dimitri Chamblas, Madeline Hollander, Jamar Roberts, Pam Tanowitz, and Benjamin Millepied each take on a specific musical section, creating a layered performance concerned with technology, nature, society, and the sense of a world out of balance. The result promises an elegant, urgent, and deeply contemporary encounter with dance.
