Confederates

Dominique Morisseau’s Confederates connects two Black women separated by more than 150 years of American history. Sara, an enslaved woman who becomes a Union spy during the Civil War, and Sandra, a tenured political-science professor navigating a prestigious contemporary university, confront very different worlds shaped by strikingly familiar questions of race, gender, power, trust, and institutional betrayal.

Directed by Raymond O. Caldwell, the Los Angeles premiere moves between past and present with biting humor and theatrical ingenuity, using the parallels between the two women to examine Black womanhood and the enduring structures embedded in American institutions. The production runs through December 13, 2026.
