Franne Davids “Figures without Names”
Figures without Names presents the extraordinary posthumous work of Franne Davids, whose paintings and works on paper reveal decades of obsessive, layered artistic practice shaped largely outside traditional art world structures. Working in relative isolation for nearly four decades, Davids created richly textured canvases and psychologically charged compositions populated primarily by women, interior spaces, and recurring symbolic forms.
Her work is marked by countless layers of oil paint, constant revision, and an unconventional relationship to chronology, making each piece feel like both artifact and ongoing process. The exhibition explores not only Davids’ remarkable visual language, but also broader questions surrounding visibility, mental illness, institutional exclusion, and artistic legacy.
The result is a deeply compelling and intellectually resonant exhibition that feels both historically significant and emotionally powerful, offering audiences a rare encounter with an artist whose work challenges traditional narratives of artistic recognition.
