HARD LINE WOMEN  Japanese women artists 1960s, 70s, 80s,  and today

Hard Line Women brings together generations of Japanese women artists working across painting, performance, sculpture, installation, photography, and design from the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, and today. The exhibition focuses on artists who developed distinctive approaches to hard-edged abstraction, geometry, and formal order while working during pivotal moments in both modern art and the global women’s movement.

Rather than treating hard-edge abstraction as a single aesthetic, the exhibition reveals how each artist pushed its boundaries through material experimentation, precision, restraint, and highly individual visual languages. Together, the works illuminate important threads in twentieth-century modernism while foregrounding the contributions of pioneering Japanese women artists. Hard Line Women remains on view through November 7, 2026.
