The Quilted Virtuoso: MonoNeon Brings Deep Funk to the Blue Note

Fresh off the surprise release of his latest album, This Dirt Loves Me More Than You, the world’s most eccentric bass virtuoso is coming to Sunset Boulevard. MonoNeon will headline a high-voltage two-night residency at Blue Note Los Angeles on Monday, February 9, and Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

Known for his signature quilted masks and left-handed, upside-down playing style, MonoNeon (born Dywane Thomas Jr.) has evolved from a viral YouTube sensation into a Grammy-winning powerhouse. One of the last musicians to work closely with Prince at Paisley Park, he has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative bassists of his generation, blending microtonal melodies with heavy Memphis soul and experimental funk.

A Southern Soul Testimony

The residency highlights his new project, This Dirt Loves Me More Than You, a “homemade jam” that weaves introspective lyrics with “outsider art” keyboard harmonies. The album is deeply rooted in his family ties, featuring the voices of his mother and grandmother—notably on tracks like “Soul Deposit” and “Better Days Are Coming.”

Fans can expect a performance that mirrors the “glittery fuckery” of his recordings: a seamless transition from virtuosic, finger-twisting solos to deep, infectious grooves that honor his Southern roots while leaning into the avant-garde.

The Blue Note Experience

The intimate atmosphere of the Blue Note provides a rare opportunity to witness MonoNeon’s intricate technique up close. Backed by a live ensemble that matches his unpredictable energy, the show promises to be a masterclass in modern funk, likely featuring fan favorites like “Jelly Roll” and “Basquiat & Skittles.”
