African Grace and Jazz Innovation: Somi Debuts at Blue Note Los Angeles

A true renaissance woman of the global jazz scene is set to grace Sunset Boulevard as vocalist and composer Somi makes her highly anticipated appearance at Blue Note Los Angeles. The Grammy-nominated artist will perform two intimate sets for one night only on Monday, February 23, 2026.

Known for her sophisticated “New African Jazz,” Somi—born Somi Kakoma to immigrants from Uganda and Rwanda—has carved a unique space in the musical landscape. Her work seamlessly weaves together her East African heritage with the storytelling traditions of American jazz and soul.

A Legacy of Tribute and Triumph

Somi’s recent career has been marked by historic achievements. She became the first African woman ever nominated for a Grammy in any jazz category for her live album Holy Room. Her latest studio project, Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba, serves as a powerful tribute to the legendary South African singer and activist, a project that was born alongside her critically acclaimed Off-Broadway musical, Dreaming Zenzile.

Beyond her vocal prowess, Somi is a Doris Duke Artist Award recipient and a celebrated playwright who recently made her Broadway debut in Jaja’s African Hair Braiding. Currently pursuing a PhD at Harvard University, she brings an intellectual and cultural depth to her performances that is rare in contemporary music.

The Live Experience

At the Blue Note, audiences can expect an evening of “storytelling through song.” Backed by her world-class ensemble, Somi’s performance is likely to feature reimagined African standards alongside her original compositions, all delivered with the poise and power that have earned her comparisons to Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba.
