A Modern Supergroup: The Bad Plus with Chris Potter & Craig Taborn

HOLLYWOOD, CA – In a rare convergence of contemporary jazz giants, members of the groundbreaking ensemble The Bad Plus join forces with saxophone titan Chris Potter and visionary pianist Craig Taborn for a special residency at Blue Note Los Angeles. The quartet will perform four sets across Tuesday, March 10, and Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

This high-concept project finds the ensemble revisiting and reimagining the formative repertoire of Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet. For Reid Anderson and Dave King (founding members of The Bad Plus), the music of the original Jarrett/Redman/Haden/Motian lineup served as the foundation for their own boundary-pushing careers.

Reaffirming a Legacy of Freedom

The performance is described not merely as a tribute, but as a continuation of the “American Quartet spirit”—a fearless commitment to musical dialogue that balances swing, freedom, and folk-like melodicism. The lineup brings together four distinct, powerhouse voices:

  • Chris Potter: Widely considered one of the most commanding tenor saxophonists of his generation.

  • Craig Taborn: A pianist celebrated for his technical brilliance and avant-garde improvisational depth.

  • Reid Anderson (Bass) & Dave King (Drums): The rhythmic engine behind The Bad Plus, known for redefining the modern jazz trio through rock-influenced energy and complex interplay.

The Live Experience

Audiences can expect an evening of “raw, exploratory energy.” By merging their own modern sensibilities with the seminal structures of Jarrett’s 1970s masterworks, the group aims to highlight the lasting relevance of that era’s experimental jazz for today’s landscape. Given the technical prowess of all four members, these shows are anticipated to be among the most musically dense and creatively adventurous dates on the 2026 Blue Note calendar.
