A Table for Fortune
October 12 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
National Book Award winner William T. Vollmann discusses A Table for Fortune, his monumental four-volume, 3,000-plus-page novel spanning more than half a century of American politics, war, family, and personal upheaval. Moving from the Cold War through September 11 and the War on Terror, the book blends archival history with an intimate family saga centered first on CIA analyst Elliott Stevens and later on his son Matthew.
Spanning 1968 to 2019, the work draws on materials including Stasi documents, Iraqi newspapers, and presidential broadcasts while tracing addiction, disillusionment, ambition, and the complicated inheritance of one generation by the next.
