YNEZ JOHNSTON  In Search of the Oracle

Ynez Johnston: In Search of the Oracle surveys seven decades of the artist’s richly imaginative practice, bringing together paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed-media works shaped by a lifelong fascination with ancient civilizations, myth, travel, and invented worlds. Johnston’s visual language blends influences ranging from Maya glyphs and Tibetan thangkas to Byzantine mosaics, transforming them into strange cities, creatures, symbols, and dreamlike landscapes.

Rather than simply borrowing from historical sources, Johnston fused those references into a highly personal mythology filled with chimerical beings, ritual spaces, and imagined journeys. Spanning works from the 1950s through the 2000s, the exhibition reveals the continuity of her remarkable inner world across multiple mediums. The exhibition remains on view through January 9, 2027.
