JELLO BRAIN – SMASH HIT RETURNS TO LA at Madnani Theatre

The human brain is the texture of Jell-O. Discovering that someone you love very much is not the same anymore and is significantly affected in intellectual functioning with normal activities and relationships, especially when you are only 25 years old, is a true challenge to bear. Dementia is one of those diseases, and everyone is affected by it differently. Losing the ability to solve problems and maintaining emotional control may arise. Also, experiencing personality changes and behavioral problems, such as agitation, delusions, and hallucinations are a common tread for people with that challenging situation.

JELLO BRAIN, produced by Jonah Weiland, written and performed by Natalie Grove, gives us a taste of the harshness of dealing with early dementia, especially when it progresses extremely fast, with nothing to be done about it. She was watching her mom, the most outspoken, sassy, and stylish person she knew, slowly becoming ashamed of herself and insecure. As the sole actor, Natalie plays herself, her mother, and seven other characters.           By the trembling of her voice and shedding tears, when touching upon the extremely emotional moments, everyone can see how deeply she is affected by her mom’s condition. Her emotions are real, raw, and beautiful to watch.

Directed by Terra Mackintosh, an award-winning actor, producer, writer, and director, the show begins with Natalie’s mom transitioning from assisted living to memory care.  Under Terra’s direction, Natalie’s emotions flow freely with all the mixed emotions of a daughter who is grateful, and mom who is proud of Natalie and her sister. By watching this show, the intriguing, simple, yet engaging emotions will bring back memories and the love experienced, to anyone who ever dealt with such a challenge,

Drew Roger Conrad and Mark Zelen are Sound designers, and an Award-winning Publicist Sandra Kuker-Franco oversees the publicity.

After last year’s sold out run at the 2024 Hollywood Fringe Festival, JELLO BRAIN returned with only four performances to Madnani Theatre (Main Space), 6760 Lexington Ave., Hollywood. Performances of the highly recommended play were on July 10, July 11, July 18, and July 19.
